Protecting nature, connecting people
The increasing pressure to exploit intact ecosystems undermine the important and valuable services they provide for people. Ecosystems that are healthy underpin and often support the social-ecological systems that are vulnerable to locally and globally relevant challenges. It is important to sustainably manage and maintain healthy and intact ecosystems and work towards restoring degraded ecosystems. The economic, social, and ecological value of intact ecosystems contributes to protecting biodiversity, reducing environmental degradation, mitigating pollution and climate change. The ecological infrastructure associated with intact ecosystems provide value-added ecosystem services. The Healthy Ecosystem thematic area is transdisciplinary, working with landowners, communities, businesses, researchers, and government agencies across various sectors providing evidence and tools towards sustainable management. We believe that intact ecosystems build resilience, contribute to poverty reduction and facilitate sustainable green growth. We work across a few strategic focal areas including, Freshwater, Citizen Sciences, Biodiversity and Environmental Information Systems.
Our work includes
- Improving the way that society interacts with water and the environment, through citizen science tools and community engagement and workshops.
- Monitoring the ecosystems’ water quality, aquatic ecology and biodiversity responses and impacts from water resources use and management
- Determining the cusp between water and land ecosystems, connectivity, and functionality across rivers, wetlands and estuaries.
- Looking at systems wholistically integrating models, spatial tools and applications to give ecosystems a voice in the landscape.
- Curving the loss of biodiversity by sustainably managing intact ecosystem and associated services they provide

- Ingula/Drakensberg Water Quality Monitoring: The Monitoring of Water Quality and Bio-monitoring Indicators at the Ingula and Drakensberg Pump Storage Schemes project is undertaken by the Institute of Natural Resources NPC (INR) on behalf of Eskom to monitor the potential impacts of the pump storage schemes on water resources in compliance with the Water Use Licence (WUL) issued by the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) under the National Water Act (Act 36 of 1998). The monitoring programme supports regulatory compliance while promoting the environmentally sustainable management of water resources. It includes the routine monitoring of potable water, surface water, raw water, boreholes, and wastewater treatment effluent, together with ecological assessments using fish communities, diatoms, the South African Scoring System (SASS5), and habitat integrity assessments to evaluate the health and condition of aquatic ecosystems.
