The schematic map below shows the Jozini Dam to the south of Swaziland.  Waters are provided to the commercial Mkuze sugar systems, to the Makatini irrigation system (smallholders mixed cropping) and to the Pongola floodplain – a site of rich biodiversity supported by the river, a number of open water pans and marshes.

Ecosystem services in these three areas are provided by the Jozini waters, the allocation of which are decided at the dam by the Department of Water Affairs (DWAF) and a Water User Association, comprising stakeholders from many user groups.  Getting the allocation right will help optimize food production, livelihoods and biodiversity on the floodplain.
